Welcome to Tuesday Tales. After a little time of for the holidays I’m back with a new prompt. This week’s prompt is Gray and we’ll be diving into the world of Shadow Play a work in progress with Demons and Witches.
“You sure you’re ready for this?” Nate leaned against the door frame with his arms folded across his chest.
Riella pinned one last curl in place as she met Nate’s eyes in the mirror. One eyebrow quirked up at his question. “Should I be asking you that? Keep grinding your teeth like that and they’re going to break off.”
“Don’t start Ella. We’re about to march into the fucking lion’s den. I’m allowed to worry.”
“Would you relax please? Nothing is going to happen tonight. We are scouting things out. Nothing more.” Riella turned and leaned back against the sink. “Few drinks, maybe a little dancing and then we’ll come home before your personality turns into a pumpkin.”
“Shame the glass slipper makes my foot look fat.” Nate tucked an unruly curl that had come loose behind her ear with a smirk. “As long as that’s all we’re going to do than it will be fine. You bringing reinforcements?”
An un-ladylike snort escaped. “Do I ever go into a situation like this unprepared? I have everything I need in my purse. Are you planning on feeding tonight?” Worry crept into her voice. Nate could take care of himself and she knew this but their possible proximity to the Black Widow added to it.
“If I can I will but I’ll be careful. As much as I know you want to meet the Widow I don’t care to be on her list.” Nate pressed his lips to her forehead.
“Good. As annoying as your nagging can get I do enjoy having you around. If we cannot find anyone suitable tonight I’ll take care of you when we get home.” Her hand came up to silence any protests. “Only if it’s needed okay? You get cranky when you’re hungry.”
“Can we get this over with please?”
Riella followed Nate out to the car. The ride the club was comfortably silent. No arguments and no attempts to sway her from the task, which she appreciated. As the sign Shadow Light came into view she whispered a spell of protection under her breath. The feel of magic enveloping them in an added layer of security reduced the size of the knot in her stomach.
Despite how confident she acted in front of Nate, the job did make her nervous. Regardless of the fact that her family studied the Black Widow at every opportunity the thought of coming face to face with her still left a level of trepidation.
“Looks like a few demon bouncers at the door.” Nate’s voice broke through her thoughts.
“Considering she kills demons for a living this would be the perfect place to scout out her next mark.” Riella smiled up at the valet that opened the car door. With a quick tug she straightened her corset. She linked her arm through Nate’s as he slipped up next to her. “Shall we?”
“I’m not sure what is worse at the moment…walking into the lion’s den or you walking there in that outfit.” Nate smirked at her as they joined the line at the front of the door.
Riella gave herself a quick onceover. “What’s wrong with what I’m wearing?”
“Well for one the leather pants you’re wearing are look like they’re painted on. The corset, while it looks smashing on you, could injure someone if the girls pop out of the top.”
“And the issue is?”
“If I weren’t a better man I’d have said hell no to the club and we could have had a go at it back home.” Nate winked at her as the line moved up.
“I like to be prepared. You know I hate fighting in a dress.” Riella flashed a grin back at him. There had been times in their complicated relationship that they had discussed giving an actual relationship a go but it felt odd. They were best friends and to cross that line had the potential to mess up their chemistry on the job.
“Let’s endeavor to not fight tonight hmm?”
“Definitely the plan for tonight. Hmm looks like Penumbra for a bouncer.” Riella chewed on her bottom lip.
“How can you tell? He looks human.”
“You of all people know that looks can be deceiving. Not like they are going to stand out in the open with their gray skin and shadows swirling around them.” She laughed with a shake of her head. “What am I going to do with you?”
“Take your meal somewhere else. This is a no kill zone.” The bouncer towered over the pair with a scowl.
“Well aren’t you as subtle as a gynecologist wearing a gas mask.” Riella met the bouncer’s gaze with no trepidation. “Is it the club’s policy to expose demons exist or are you just from a Penumbra clan with no brains?”
The scowl remained firmly in place on the demon’s face. “Humans do not tend to fair well here when accompanied by a Genesis demon.”
A surprised gasp escaped from Riella’s parted lips. She brought her hand up in an overly dramatic gesture to cover her mouth as the turned towards Nate. “You’re a demon. Whatever shall I do? Oh no. Save me please.”
Nate pinched the bridge of his nose. “Man you do not know what you have started.”
A smile graced Riella’s lips as she dropped the pretense. “I know exactly what he is. He’s my roommate. The problem is you don’t realize what I am.”
“And what is that miss?” The demon quirked an eyebrow, the only change in his expression.
“Oh I’m a demon’s worst nightmare when I want to be. Tonight I just feel like dancing though. Now may we go inside or better yet is your boss around?”
“Is there a problem out here?” Another Penumbra demon stepped up to the group.
Riella let her eyes travel over the demon that joined them. The black polo he wore stretched across his muscular chest and in arms and sparked a brief fantasy of just how she would like to remove it. Her eyes locked with his and she hesitated for a split second when she noted they were the same shade as hers. Not something she saw often in human or demon kind.
“Miss?” The newcomer prodded when she stayed silent.
“Your bouncer is giving us a hard time about going inside. Seems to think I’m going to end up as lunch for my roommate.” She inclined her head towards Nate. “Which normally I would be happy to see but his lack of tack not only irked me but could have exposed the greater demon population had there been any normal humans around.”
A growl rumbled through the space between them. “My apologies if he offended you. We are extra vigilant when it comes to his kind.” He sneered in Nate’s direction.
“Don’t worry I’ll make sure he behaves.” She glanced between the pair. “So do you two have names or shall I just call you Thing 1 and Thing 2?”
“I am MichTav’k but you may call me Micha and this is Jonah.” Micha’s stance stayed tense as he introduced himself and the bouncer that had initially stopped them. “And you are?”
“Riella and this is Nate.”
“Pleasure to me you.” Micha bowed his head to her. “Please enjoy yourself and if you need assistance just ask.”
“Appreciate it.” Riella waved her fingers to the pair and she guided Nate into the club.
“You are a piece of work you know that right?” Nate chuckled.
“Yeah but you love me.”
